The reason it wouldn't make sense to multiply dollar amounts against other types of dollar amounts is that multiplication is calculated against units.
Think about 5 times 5 dollars instead of 5 dollars times 5 dollars. Same goes for 5 dollars multiplied by 5 instead of 5 dollars multiplied by 5 dollars.
